Okay, so I bit the bullet because I have tested my Peugeot’s starter forwards and back, and for some reason it just doesn’t seem to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I ordered one that will arrive on Thursday - however I need to move it across town. Find me the best way to start an automatic without a starter. Give me your Red Greens, your Red Necks and everything in between. I have to get it fired off by 8 tonight otherwise I have to use AAA and listen to the driver diss on French cars and laugh at it. Besides I am just curious as to if it can be done. The winner will get a video of me using said method on a 31 year old French car

To be fair it has been a slow cranker for 2 previous owners that had been worked around so I wasn’t all that surprised it died, but whatever, one more thing off the list when it is installed. All I wanted to do was get a fresh coat of wax on it this weekend...

You can still bump start it, just requires alot more sped and is probably bad for the tranny. It isn’t at the top of a steep hill, is it?

no it is in the garage at my house - which sounds odd but it is the house I own for my ex and kids to live in, and I dont want to leave it here. And I don’t want to do that to a recently serviced and running awesome 3HP22. My Invicta has a rear pump on it so I would have no problems with that one

Looks like you’re gonna be listening to the AAA guy. You can bump start an auto it but I wouldn’t recommend it if you have an ancient tranny you want to keep for awhile.

First, buy it some flowers. It's French so you'll need a good wine too. No Two Buck Chuck for this lady. Since it can't move you bring her a picnic. Slowly caress her. Don't just jump in and go for the gold. She'll let you know when it's time. Check to make sure she's lubricated. Then, hop in, turn that key, and hope it worked. French girls can be finicky I hear.
Or you could try to bump start it by pushing/pulling with a truck.

If you do it right it could go viral. Or you may get herpes.

Rent a U-Haul trailer and a Home Depot truck? Sounds like a great, $100 way to do it, though honestly I would call AAA and just deal with it for the free move.

As you’ve been told above: Bump start, but it takes a lot of speed with an automatic transmission. You’ll need it going at ~25-30mph in neutral with the key in the on position, then drop it into drive and that oil windmill will suck up most of the energy before spinning the engine. There's no other way to start a modern electric-start car without the starter.

You have tried the old “bang the starter with a stick” thing haven’t you?

Oh yeah I did that before disassembling it

How much access do you have to tools and how much time do you have? Also a spare starter?
Could there be a way to rig on another starter with a home-made bracket just to crank the engine once?
Definite long-shot, but there’s a slim chance it might work.

I have a ton of tools, and it is in a garage, but no other random starters around save for one from an 05 grand cherokee, and the bendix is wildly different!

Hole through the bumper, lug on the harmonic balancer, and away. You know you want to.

Pull a McGuyver and build a shotgun starter. You should be able to jerry-rig the old starter with some metal tubing, a modified 12 guage shell, and lots of JB Weld.

This always worked when the starter/electronics/wiring/switchgear/magic-smoke/Lucas-Demons gave up for the day in my buddy’s Series II Land Rover... (it was red, and the chant was always “red rover, red rover, won’t you please just turn over!”)
never seen under the hood of a 505... what’er the chances of sticking something in there?
heavy-duty recoil starter from a big outboard?

I do have an electric impact, I have to see if I can sneak it on the crank and make sure my reflexes are good!

I do really really want to. All automatic cars should have this - but I can smell lawsuits from 10 miles away

How about I just grab the Mossberg and keep shooting at the flexplate?

Your engine is still *just* small enough to actually crank, in theory. Not having a flywheel, it might be more of a pain, but I can’t say I’ve tried cranking anything without a flywheel...

I’ve started a Triumph TR4 with one of these...
Not that I recommend you do... the risk to your radiator is high.

Just be sure to use the proper load. Birdshot will probably just make some little dings, you want a slug to cause damage.
Wait, what are we talking about again?

Drat :S anyone you know have a tow dolly? Not good to tow an auto on one, but I have heard of some desperate soul locking the steering straight and sticking the back on the dolly...
